Saint Vladimir the Great — Baptizer of Kyivan Rus’

Saint Vladimir the Great, once a prince searching for truth, became the light-bearer of Christianity to the people of Kyivan Rus’ in 988. His conversion to Christ and baptism of his nation shaped the spiritual roots of the Ukrainian people and their enduring Byzantine Catholic tradition. As our patron, Saint Vladimir inspires us to seek God with courage, embrace the faith fully, and lead our families and community closer to Christ.

A Life Transformed by Faith

Born a prince and known for his power and ambition, Vladimir of Kyiv once sought strength in earthly ways. Yet, his heart was restless until he encountered the Gospel of Christ. After sending envoys to study the faiths of neighboring nations, he was deeply moved by the beauty and depth of the Byzantine Christian liturgy in Constantinople. In 988, Vladimir was baptized, and with him, his people entered the life of the Church.

His personal transformation — from a ruler of conquest to a Christian king marked by mercy, justice, and care for the poor — remains a witness to God’s grace. Through Saint Vladimir’s example, we remember that true strength is found in faith and that baptism is the gateway to a new life in Christ. Our parish, dedicated to his name, strives to carry this same mission today: to know God, to love Him, and to serve Him with joy and steadfast hope.
