Helping Ukrainian Families Rebuild in Central Alberta

Formed in March 2022 by local churches, businesses, and caring individuals, the UDPPC unites volunteers from across Central Alberta to support Ukrainians displaced by war. What began as a small effort to arrange travel and host families has grown into a regional network dedicated to helping newcomers find safety, housing, employment, and community — and to begin again with dignity and hope.

Our Mission of Hope and Service

The Ukrainian Displaced Persons Planning Committee (UDPPC) was created to help Ukrainian families who have fled war find peace and belonging in Central Alberta.
Our mission is simple yet profound: to provide practical, social, and spiritual support to those rebuilding their lives far from home.

From the first phone call to the first day of work, UDPPC volunteers walk beside newcomers — offering not only help, but genuine friendship, compassion, and hope.

Key Areas of Support

Travel & Resettlement – Coordinating travel from Ukraine and connecting families with host homes.

Housing Support – Assisting in finding affordable housing and furnishing apartments with donated items.

Employment Assistance – Matching skills with local jobs, helping with resumes, and interview preparation.

Social & Emotional Care – Partnering with Catholic Social Services and volunteers to provide counselling, connection, and access to essential services.

Our Impact in the Community

Since its founding in 2022, the UDPPC has become a beacon of compassion across Central Alberta. Through partnerships with churches, local businesses, and countless volunteers, we continue to help Ukrainian families find safety and stability.

Our Impact So Far:

  • Supported over 790 displaced persons from 306 families.

  • Outfitted 20–30 newcomer homes each month with furniture and essentials.

  • Partnered with Leons, The Brick, and Sims Furniture to supply mattresses and household items.

  • Helped newcomers secure stable employment with local employers.

  • Honoured with the 2023 Community Builder Award (City of Red Deer) and the Humanitarian of the Year Award (UCC Alberta Chapter).

Each success story reflects the power of faith and community working hand in hand to restore dignity and hope.

Recognized as a Community Builder

In June 2023, the Ukrainian Displaced Persons Planning Committee (UDPPC) received the Mayor’s Community Builder Award from the City of Red Deer.
This honour recognized the committee’s outstanding leadership, compassion, and tireless service in helping displaced Ukrainian families settle, find stability, and thrive in Central Alberta.

The award stands as a testament to the generosity of countless volunteers, donors, and community partners who continue to embody the Gospel call to love one’s neighbour through action.
